For: Adults and Young Adults ages 13 and up

Runs on Tuesdays from 1:00pm to 2:00pm from September 13th through November 29th.

A firm grasp of music theory is one of the best tools any musician can have. Although no previous experience with music is required, a basic understanding of note-reading for both treble and bass clef will be very helpful.

This course will cover:

  • Basic and Advanced Notation.
  • Scales: Chromatic, Major, and Minor. (Natural, Melodic, & Harmonic)
  • Major and Minor Key Relationships and the Circle of 5ths.
  • Intervals: Diatonic and Chromatic.
  • Basic Chords (triads): Major, Minor, Augmented, Diminished, and inversions.
  • Introduction to 7th chords and other extended chords.
  • Functional Harmony. (I,IV,V)
  • Transposition: Melodic and Harmonic.
  • Harmonizing and Composing Melodies.
  • Students will compose a short piece of piano music as their final project in this class.

    Meets: Once per week over 12 weeks for 60 minutes. Starts September 13th.
